The MUSIC TAPES to play at BACKSPACE in February! 2/21/09!
THE MUSIC TAPES to play at BACKSPACE!
Folks, I have never been more proud to announce an upcoming show! From the heart of the Elephant 6 collective, come indie experimental superheroes The Music Tapes, who's leader, Julian Koster is one of the original and founding members of Neutral Milk Hotel. Julian is the saw playing, moog playing, accordion playing, guitar and banjo playing, drumming and just all around swell guy who does everything from making films, to writing children's books. Some of his recent work includes the short film, Major Organ and the Adding Machine, which was premiered at the Elephant 6 Collective's "Holiday Surprise" tour just 3 months ago in October 08. There were several astonishing performances by Julian and Jeff Mangum, sitting together on two chairs literally in the middle of the audience, doing a Neutral Milk Hotel tune with nothing but a saw and an acoustic guitar. If you watch the youtube footage, you can actually hear people gasping in awe.
Hhere's a good clip from Lexington- you can't see Julian but it's a great view of Jeff Mangum in the middle of the crowd, and you can sure as hell hear Julian's singing saw.
In this one you see Julian on the banjo, getting crazy with Jeff during the Olivia Tremor Control song, "The Opera House"...
Joining The Music Tapes at Backspace will be another Athens, GA band, Nana Grizol, featuring Laura Carter of Elf Power, and also multimedia artist Brian Dewan. Mr. Dewan drew Neutral Milk Hotel's famous Flying Victrola! Here he is performing with Julian... Magnetic Fields fans check this out!
The show is ALL AGES and takes place on Saturday, Feb 21 at 9pm, $10 adv - $12 at door. Backspace 115 NW 5th, Portland. TICKETS: brownpapertickets.com

Chris Robley & the Fear of Heights, James Low, Tango Alpha Tango at Someday Lounge 12/05/08
December 5 marked the release of Chris Robley & the Fear of Heights cd entitled movie theatre haiku. Tango Alpha Tango opened the evening to a packed house, followed by the sweet sounds of James Low and his all-star band, and a bigger-than-life presentation by Chris and crew.... their songs sounded quite majestic in the Someday Space.
