"Quasi is sort of a dedicated indie rock fan's wet dream. They're kind of obscure and they have lots of obscure, hard-to-find recordings on lots of cool labels, but they feature a pair of important indie rock musicians -- Sam Coomes, who we know from Heatmiser, The Donner Party, and Motorgoat and Janet Weiss, who drums in a little band called Sleater-Kinney."
Let me be the first to say, Julian Koster still doing it! Julian is even more "Julian" than ever! His first tour in over ten years is off to a magical start. He brought the whole family - the Seven Foot Tall Metronome, Static the TV, Christmas tunes (in February) on The Singing Saw, a giant plastic camel full of memories, oh, and dueling drummers with some girl named Laura Carter and Theo from Nana Grizol.
A Music Tapes show is reminiscent of a Christmas pageant.... in another dimension. Brian Dewan's famous home-made oscillating instruments and nursery-rhyme-meets-dreamlike-eduction film tied the whole show together with a very "Dr. Seuss" tone. Sandwiched between the two was Nana Grizol, who's melodic tw-indieness really blew away the crowd. I had so many people come and whisper in my ear how wonderful they were.
The highlight of the show, however, was when Julian took the entire crowd of fans outside on to the sidewalk to play a game. The tour is still going, so I won't give it away... let's just say it involves fire and may have been the funnest thing I've ever done in the middle of someone's set! This show did not disappoint, in fact, I watched the only handful of skeptics in the room convert to huge fans right before my eyes. This interstellar circus is a real treat. Imagine having the Flaming Lips play in your living room? Well, it's kind of like that, only cuter.

THE MUSIC TAPES to play at BACKSPACE! Folks, I have never been more proud to announce an upcoming show! From the heart of the Elephant 6 collective, come indie experimental superheroes The Music Tapes, who's leader, Julian Koster is one of the original and founding members of Neutral Milk Hotel. Julian is the saw playing, moog playing, accordion playing, guitar and banjo playing, drumming and just all around swell guy who does everything from making films, to writing children's books. Some of his recent work includes the short film, Major Organ and the Adding Machine, which was premiered at the Elephant 6 Collective's "Holiday Surprise" tour just 3 months ago in October 08. There were several astonishing performances by Julian and Jeff Mangum, sitting together on two chairs literally in the middle of the audience, doing a Neutral Milk Hotel tune with nothing but a saw and an acoustic guitar. If you watch the youtube footage, you can actually hear people gasping in awe.
Hhere's a good clip from Lexington- you can't see Julian but it's a great view of Jeff Mangum in the middle of the crowd, and you can sure as hell hear Julian's singing saw.
In this one you see Julian on the banjo, getting crazy with Jeff during the Olivia Tremor Control song, "The Opera House"...
Joining The Music Tapes at Backspace will be another Athens, GA band, Nana Grizol, featuring Laura Carter of Elf Power, and also multimedia artist Brian Dewan. Mr. Dewan drew Neutral Milk Hotel's famous Flying Victrola! Here he is performing with Julian... Magnetic Fields fans check this out!
The show is ALL AGES and takes place on Saturday, Feb 21 at 9pm, $10 adv - $12 at door. Backspace 115 NW 5th, Portland. TICKETS: brownpapertickets.com
